Coreg is a blood pressure medication and belongs to the class of drugs known as beta-blockers.
Coreg is prescribed for people with congestive heart failure to increase survival and reduce the need for hospitalization.

Contraindications

Coreg is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
- any type of circulatory disease;
- asthma;
- depression;
- diabetes;
- heart problems such as low blood pressure, slow heart rate, sick sinus syndrome, a pacemaker or heart failure;
- kidney disease;
- liver disease;
- thyroid disease;
- if you develop these signs of liver disorder: appetite loss, dark urine, flu-like symptoms, itching, pain in your side, or yellowing of the skin. you will need to be switched from Coreg;
- if you have asthma, certain serious heart conditions, or liver disease;
- if you have circulation problems in the arms and legs;
- if you have diabetes or low blood sugar;
- if you have either condition;
- if you wear contact lenses;

Interactions

Do not take Coreg with any of the following drugs:
- diabetes medication;
- heart medication;
- non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs;
- respiratory medications;
- stomach medications;
- calcium channel blockers (blood pressure and heart medications such as calan, cardizem, isoptin, and verelan);
- cimetidine (tagamet);
- clonidine (catapres);
- clonidine;
- cyclosporine (neoral, sandimmune);
- diabetes pills such as diabinese, glucophage, and rezulin;
- digoxin (lanoxin);
- digoxin;
- diltiazem;
- doxazosin;
- drugs classified as mao inhibitors, including the antidepressants nardil and parnate;
- fluoxetine (prozac);
- insulin;
- nifedipine;
- paroxetine (paxil);
- prazosin;
- propafenone (rythmol);
- quanadrel;
- quinidine (quinaglute);
- reserpine (ser-ap-es);
- reserpine;
- rifampin (rifadin);
- terazosin;
- verapamil;

Dosage

ADULTS

Congestive Heart Failure

Your doctor may increase the dosage every 2 weeks.
The starting dose is 3.125 mg twice a day with food.
The maximum dosage, for people weighing over 187 pounds, is 100 mg a day.

Hypertension

Your doctor may raise the dosage every 1 or 2 weeks to a maximum of 50 mg day.
The starting dose is 6.25 mg twice a day with food.

CHILDREN
The safety and effectiveness of Coreg have not been studied in children under 18.

Overdose

Reported Coreg overdose symptoms are:
- Breathing difficulties;
- confusion;
- dizziness;
- fainting;
- Heart problems;
- Loss of consciousness;
- nausea and vomiting;
- Seizures;
- Slow heartbeat;
- Very low blood pressure;
